Le sauvignon blanc d'altitude : Békaa, Levant et Méditerranée

High-altitude Sauvignon Blanc: Bekaa, the Levant and the Mediterranean

In Lebanon, a large share of the vines grow at altitude, far from the coast. Yet it is not always clear what that height actually changes in the glass.

Here is what altitude brings to Sauvignon Blanc, where to find it and which wines to buy in France.

What altitude changes in Lebanese Sauvignon Blanc

In the Bekaa, most vines grow between 900 and 1,200 m. To understand why, see our guide to Lebanese white wines. For a tasting, consider setting aside an Ixsir Grande Réserve Blanc or a Château Marsyas B-Qā Blanc.

Between days of 35 to 37 °C and nights of 15 to 20 °C, the temperature swing creates liveliness. Petit Couvent Blanc 2024 shows it well: a fresh yet supple palate.

Bear in mind that in Lebanon, Sauvignon is rarely vinified on its own. Wardy Beqaa Valley White 2025 blends 49% Sauvignon, 44% Viognier and 7% Obeidi. These proportions are what shape the taste.

To see how altitude influences this style, read our guide to high-altitude terroir wines. Steer clear of wines whose composition is left vague.

Where Sauvignon Blanc grows in Lebanon, from the Bekaa to Batroun

The Bekaa, the main wine-growing area

The Bekaa is Lebanon's main wine-growing area. It is a plateau some 100 km long, between Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon range, where most vines sit between 900 and 1,200 m.

Two estates illustrate this well. Château Marsyas, in Kefraya, has its vines between 900 and 990 m, while Petit Couvent Blanc 2024 comes from Deir el Ahmar, in the northern Bekaa.

To place the other areas, see our guide to Lebanon's wine regions: the Bekaa is just one of four major zones.

Mount Lebanon and the Metn, vineyards closer to the sea

Mount Lebanon shows a different face. The vineyards of the Metn and Aley lie on the western slope of the mountain, facing the sea, so the sea air reaches them faster than in the Bekaa.

Ixsir also has plots in Jezzine and Batroun. Close to the sea does not mean fresher. Do not pay for a label on the strength of its region name alone: check the altitude of the vineyard first.

Batroun, the highest altitude on the coast

Batroun is the highest zone on the coast. Here is what to remember:

  • The vines climb to around 1,400 m.
  • Ixsir has plots there, in addition to those in Jezzine and several sites on Mount Lebanon and in the Bekaa.
  • This figure covers all of an estate's sites. It does not necessarily give the altitude of the plot that supplied the Sauvignon in your bottle.

Why cool nights preserve the grapes' acidity

Summer in the Bekaa is very dry and very sunny. Daytime temperatures usually reach 35 to 37 °C. The grapes ripen quickly in this heat, which is a good thing: sugar levels rise and the aromas develop.

As a result, the harvest runs from mid-August to November, depending on the site and the grape variety. Not every vineyard reaches ripeness at the same time.

Cool nights slow the loss of acidity and preserve the aromas. This is what determines the freshness you perceive in the glass.

The soils, for their part, provide the structure. In the Bekaa, limestone drains water well while holding some of it deep down. To compare terroirs, see Lebanon's wine regions. For a crisp white, put altitude first.

Why Lebanese Sauvignon is rarely bottled on its own

Blends with Chardonnay and Sémillon

Château Ksara's Blanc de Blancs 2024 blends Sauvignon, Sémillon and Chardonnay, which can be surprising if you expect a pure Sauvignon. Each grape has its role: Sauvignon brings the freshness.

The Chardonnay spends two months on its lees in French oak barrels, which gives it structure. The Sémillon adds richness. For background on the vineyards, see Lebanon's winemaking tradition.

A wine's name does not tell the whole story, and with Ixsir it is worth checking. The Grande Réserve Blanc 2025 blends Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.

Nor is the Altitudes Blanc guaranteed to be a single-variety Sauvignon: check the composition on the label before buying.

To tell the styles apart, see our guide to Lebanese white wines.

The local grapes, Obeidi and Merwah

Obeidi is a Lebanese white grape. It is blended in equal parts with Sauvignon in Petit Couvent Blanc 2024, where it adds a fruity touch.

Merwah is also made as a single-variety wine: Ksara produces its Merwah 2023 from 60-year-old vines at 1,600 m. For Sauvignon in its pure form, choose Wardy and its Sauvignon Blanc 2021, 100% Sauvignon.

Which wines to choose in France, and at what price

Prices vary with the vintage and the seller, and shipping costs weigh on the total. So compare the delivered price. To choose with confidence, see the best Lebanese white wines.

Do not pay for a bottle whose composition does not mention Sauvignon: the estate name alone is not enough.

Here are four wines to compare. Their prices are not always calculated on the same basis.

How to serve this white and pair it with food

Serve Sauvignon Blanc chilled, between 8 and 10 °C. Too cold, the wine closes up its aromas and you can barely smell anything.

Petit Couvent Blanc 2024 is best a little warmer, between 10 and 12 °C, so its fruit can open up. Take the bottle out of the fridge a few minutes before serving: you will notice the difference.

To pair this white well at the table, see the best matches with Lebanese cuisine and keep these three pointers in mind:

  • Goat's cheese, feta, fish, seafood and green vegetables.
  • Fresh herbs and lemon sauces, which echo its herbaceous aromas and its acidity.
  • Very spicy or very rich dishes: they overwhelm the wine's freshness, so they are best avoided.

The liveliest Lebanese Sauvignon Blanc comes from high vineyards. The contrast between hot days and cool nights does the rest. A plot's altitude is not shown on the label: ask the estate.

Before paying, read the composition. If Sauvignon is not listed, pass and compare delivered prices.

Frequently asked questions

Can Lebanese Sauvignon Blanc be aged for several years?

Yes, Petit Couvent Blanc 2024 keeps for 1 to 5 years, until around 2029. To do so, store the bottle on its side, away from light, at around 12 °C. A cool cellar works well, a cupboard next to the radiator does not.

What is the average price of a bottle of Lebanese white wine in France?

Expect to pay between €11.90 and €24.90 for a 75 cl bottle of Lebanese white wine in France. Petit Couvent Blanc 2024 sits at the lower end of this range, and Ixsir Grande Réserve Blanc 2025 at the top.

Does Lebanon produce white wines without Sauvignon?

Yes. Merwah, a local white grape, can make a wine on its own: Château Ksara's Merwah 2023 is made from it alone.

So Sauvignon is not essential to make a Lebanese white. On the label, look for the name Merwah: it tells you the grape.

Which of Lebanon's neighbours have notable wine production?

Syria is the neighbour to remember: Lebanon and Syria share a tradition of Eastern wines, and both countries feature in the same selection of wines from the region. That gives you two benchmarks to compare.
